The Butterfly Effect – Andy Andrews – A Review

Andy Andrews, New York Times bestselling author of The Travelers Gift, has written a small book with a big message. Have you ever given serious thought to how your day-to-day actions can create a ripple effect that could potentially extend around the world? The Butterfly Effect proves to us is that this premise is truly possible – our actions matter.

I have to confess, I was skeptical that my simple day-to-day actions and thoughts could change the world. How could that be possible, after all I’m just one person minding my own business and doing my own thing? But after reading a few pages I realize that it is indeed possible, I can make a difference! Writing this review is part of the butterfly effect, a sincere hello to a neighbor is part of the butterfly effect or telling another person they’ve done a great job is part of the butterfly effect – I’m making a positive difference one person at a time. My actions count – my life matters!

In 1963 Edward Lorenz purposed this theory: “A butterfly could flap its wings and set molecules of air in motion, which would move other molecules of air, in turn moving more molecules of air – eventually capable of starting a hurricane on the other side of the world.” Sounds impossible, but the scientific community has proven Lorenz’s theory to be authentic, accurate and viable.

The Butterfly Effect by Andy Andrews has stories and examples of how of one discovery or one decision changed lives and even changed history. You know what? We do the same thing everyday and we don’t even realize it. Our words and actions are all part of The Butterfly Effect – our lives matter because we too can change history with a simple hello, recognition of a job well done or a random act of kindness.

Andrews gives examples of Joshua Chamberlain’s war changing decision during the Civil War at the Battle of Gettysburg, Norman Borlaug’s work with agriculture that helped thousands of people around the world plant and grow crops. The examples are fascinating and thought provoking.

The bottom line of The Butterfly Effect: Everything you do matters, no matter how small!

As you wake up in the morning, remember that your actions during the upcoming day matter, you matter. A simple gesture, word or action can potentially change a life or even the world – you never know whose life you’re changing for the better.

The only disappointment of this book was that it is a small gift-like book and I wanted something bigger with more pages. The Butterfly Effect is colorful and beautiful but I was expecting more of a “reading” book than a gift book. No matter the size, the message is powerful. A small book with a big message!
