Successful Leadership Traits

confidence3

The other evening I was thinking about what characterizes a great leader and wondering why we are so attracted to certain leaders at certain times in our lives? You know what I mean – the type of leader that keeps us wanting to know more and more about their message.

I began thinking and I believe I’ve found certain positive traits that just seem to attract the right people into our lives at the right time. Whether you’re the leader or looking for the right leader, these traits can prove invaluable.

1. We want to follow those people who are accountable to themselves and others. I know from personal experience, that I respect and trust those leaders who do what they say when they say they are going do it. I also believe that the first person we must be accountable to is ourselves!

2. Great leaders have powerful communication skills. Powerful communication begins on the inside and works its way out. What we say to ourselves on a daily basis is reflected back to others. Our ability to know what we want and why we want it, is step one to communicating our wants, desires and goals to others.

3. Honesty to self and others is vital to being a leader. A great leader is one who stays true to their values and beliefs. True leaders are not willing to compromise their principles just to prove a point or to make more money.

4. Personally, I want to follow and emulate someone who is going for greatness and not perfection. To my way of thinking, perfectionism is a major deterrent to success and happiness. I’m looking to pattern my success strategies after someone who understands that excellence is a greater success tool than perfection.

5. A leader is someone who is solution-oriented. By my definition, solution-oriented means searching for “how many ways will I. . .”  rather than giving up or becoming frustrated when faced with obstacles and challenges. Being able to think clearly and logically when faced with a challenge is a powerful leadership trait – wise decisions and empowering choices are huge keys to success.
