Making A Difference

We all have the ability to make a difference in the lives of those around us. With a simple smile or thank we can convey the message, “You’re appreciated, valuable and important.” How have you made a difference today?

I found this story on the Internet a few years back and it’s become a favorite of mine. It’s the type of story that sticks in your memory.

The Starfish Story

An old man was walking along a sand beach. As he walks along the edge of the water, gentle waves wash up over his tanned and weathered feet. Up ahead he notices something strange, something unusual. He squints to see through the haze of the misty morning fog.

Down the beach he sees someone bending, twisting and turning, doing some kind of a dance.

Over and over a young girl repeats her steps; first she bends down, then twists and turns, and ends by throwing her arm out towards the sea. Maybe she is practicing for a class, or perhaps her movements have something to do with martial arts, he thought.

As he walked closer, he saw her once again bend toward the sand and pick something up. As she twisted around she threw this object far out into the sea.

What is she throwing, he wondered? As he got closer he saw it, a sandy beach covered with starfish.

Poor little girl, he thought. Doesn’t she know that everyday the sea washes up these creatures with the rising tide and everyday as the tide goes out again these starfish lie on the sand and die?

He called out to her, “Excuse me, but this happens everyday when the tide goes back out. Tomorrow the beach will be full of them again.”

The girl turned away from the old man and bent down once again to pick up a starfish from the sand.

As she pulled her arm back and threw the creature into the ocean, she softly replied, “I made a difference to that one.”
