Temperatures are falling, (in some places even snow is falling) leaves are changing color and it is time to fine-tune our fall success habits. How about a year-end success habits checkup?

1. Revisit your 2011 goals.
Only a couple of months until 2012 – are you on track for achieving your 2011 goals? Make time to study them carefully and figure out what should be reworked and what should be eliminated. Goals are not etched in stone.

Figure out if what was important in January is still as important in November and December. Do you need to step up the pace to achieve your 2011 goals?

2. Plan ahead for the rest of 2011 and organize your time wisely.
It’s not too early to begin thinking ahead to the holidays. You’ll be less stressed and have more time to enjoy the spirit of the season when you’re not running around doing last minute things.

How about taking out your planning calendar and spacing out what you want to accomplish and by when – leave yourself plenty of time for relaxing and rejuvenating.

3. Analyze what’s been successful in 2011 and what you’d like to improve.
Wisdom is about knowing when to change what’s not working into something more productive. Motivational speaker Les Brown says, “If you keep doing what you’re doing, you’ll keep getting what you’re getting.”

Are you totally satisfied with what you’ve produced so far in 2011? If the answer is “yes,” congratulations! If the answer is no, it’s time to figure what needs to be changed and then begin making the desired changes.

4. Begin your “wish-list” for 2012.
Now is the time to start dreaming BIG for 2012. What do you want to be, have and accomplish during the next year?

Start a 2012 wish-list of all the possibilities for the coming year. It’s your list so dream big and bold – focus on those things that will take you forward in positive self-satisfying ways in 2012.

Look at the world economic situation and what do you see? We are bombarded with uncertainty, negativity and in some cases, panic. I believe, more than ever that at this time we should be focusing on the positives of creating abundance and wealth.

I recently saw an article implying that as a society we have embraced a financial “herd mentality” regarding the current economic situation. What do you think, are we making the financial crisis worse by dwelling on the what’s wrong instead of focusing on creating greater abundance and wealth?

There is something in behavioral science called herd mentality. Simply put, it means that a fearful group mind set develops when people begin to follow the lead of others even if they are not sure why they are following.

Herd based mentality implies that we are influenced by our peers to act, believe and react in certain ways just so we don’t feel left behind. Has a herd mentality taken over the economic world?

The entire concept of “abundance” is based on believing that there is more than enough of everything to go around. It is based in knowing that you can attract the right people and economic opportunities to you by focusing on the positive results you want to achieve and then taking the positive action to achieve them. The key is your belief in positive results coupled with taking positive action.

If as a world society we are focused consciously and unconsciously on the negatives of not being able to produce abundance and wealth, what do you think we’ll be producing more of – abundance or poverty?

Whether you believe in the Law of Attraction or not isn’t the issue. It is whether you believe in your ability and desire to become even more proactive creating prosperity, abundance and wealth. What do you believe about your ability to create prosperity and wealth?

Here’s the psychological challenge – believe with the herd that we are sliding further into an economic crisis or believe that you can personally create abundance and wealth no matter what is going on around you.

Here are a few ideas:
1. Call your forward thinking friends and have a prosperity party. Write out goals for a prosperous future and brainstorm ideas for supporting one another on the road to greater abundance and wealth.

2. Go to your financial advisor to see what you can do to support those companies who are improving our world environmentally, financially and economically.

3. Make time to visualize and journal the many ways you can increase your wealth. Listen to your inner voice as it comes up with ideas. Don’t disregard anything – you never know you may have the next multimillion-dollar idea ready to emerge.

4. Turn off the television. Read and learn how to take a more proactive approach to your own personal financial situation. Learn the facts and make up your own mind as to the best course of action for you and your family.

Trusting yourself and your ability to create abundance and wealth is a powerful wealth-building tool. Focusing on how many ways you can manage your personal economic growth will produce a positive difference in your own life and in the lives of those around you.

Here in the United States it is Independence Day weekend and it has me thinking:

Many years ago there was a commercial that claimed, “You’ve come a long way baby.” After reading this article, you’ll realize and appreciate that today’s women have truly come a long way toward greater financial independence and freedom. I know too that we have many more financial trails to blaze and we will!

I recently read a poll that was very interesting. Here’s the gist: “Of all the freedoms that women have earned over the past 100 years, which do you feel is the most important?”

a. right to control own money

b. right to vote

c. getting rid of the corset

d. greater educational/employment opportunities. . . and a few more choices.

Which do you think was the leading vote getter?

If you chose – a. right to control own money, you’re right.

Here are some interesting facts you may or may not know about what women were legally “allowed” to do and not do with their own finances.

• As recently as the 1960’s married women could not borrow money in their own name.

• In the 1960’s it was legal to pay women and men differently for doing exactly the same job. In fact it was legal to advertise jobs: Help Wanted – Men or Help Wanted – Women.

• In early American law there was a legal concept known coverture. Basically it decreed that a women’s legal status after marriage changed so that husband and wife became one legal entity. What did that mean? A woman lost her legal identity as far as financial and property rights were concerned. Wives could not control their own property (physical or financial), could not bring lawsuits and could not make contracts. The husband had complete control to sell or dispose of property without her permission, even if the property belonged to her before the marriage.

• Dower was the portion or share of a woman’s deceased husband’s real estate to which she was legally entitled to inherit. Generally, the wife was entitled to just one-third of her deceased husband’s property. As the widow, she had no rights to sell or bequeath her share of that property. The United States abolished dower in 1945.

Why do I even bring up the past? I believe, many of the old “truisms” about women and money are still affecting money beliefs today. As modern capable women, we may be dragging around old beliefs, insecurities and “truisms” about the ability to expertly handle money.

Ask yourself this, what did you hear in your family or neighborhood about wealthy women?

Your negative and positive beliefs and values about money are handed down from generation to generation. Beliefs and values are formed through family stories, watching the behavior of important role models and even unconscious emotional reactions to day-to-day financial situations. What great-grandmother believed and felt generations ago may still be a part of your unconscious belief system today.

The lessons to be learned: The past is the past – it’s our time and choice to go forward in positive, empowered and productive financial ways.

I’ve read each one myself and I know these books aren’t too “heavy” but will still get you thinking about building a successful business and a successful life – the perfect combination. Enjoy!

1. Think and Grow Rich – Napoleon Hill
This time-tested and often quoted classic is still as meaningful and powerful today as it was when Napoleon Hill released it in 1937. Think and Grow Rich contains a step-by-step process for using your mind combined with taking positive action to create success. Remember, it was written in the 1930’s and the wording is a little archaic and can be a bit sexist BUT it is the message that is important.

2. Women and Money – Suze Orman
This is one of my favorite money books because it was written for women by a woman. Suze shows us how to wisely handle money and build a solid financial future. Suze Orman writes as if she is talking to her best friend about how to become a more financially wise and secure woman. My favorite part is about how we should take ourselves “off the sales rack” and stop accepting less than what we are worth. Of all the books I’m suggesting, you should absolutely read this with pen and paper near by.

3. The Happiness Project – Gretchen Rubin
If you are ready to find the “happiness” in all the different aspects in your life, this is the summer reading for you. The subtitle says it all: Why I spent a year trying to sing in the morning, clean my closets, fight right, read Aristotle and generally have more fun. The whole premise is that you are the only one who can make yourself happy and happiness is under your own roof if.

4. Promise Me – Nancy G. Brinker
This is a true account of a sister who by keeping a promise built a worldwide movement to end breast cancer. I found this book filled with both life and business lessons. I believe successful businesses are built out of passion and a mission – if that mission is strong enough, the business will succeed no matter the roadblocks. Nancy Brinker made a promise to her dying sister Suzy Koman to help women with breast cancer. It is out of this promise that Nancy built a worldwide organization. Good lessons for all of us!

5. Shark Tales – Barbara Corcoran
A very well written book filled with practical and thought provoking life and business lessons. Barbara Corcoran is a very determined and resourceful woman who used her “out of the box” thinking to build a real estate empire in New York City.  The lessons this self-made entrepreneur shares come from what she was taught by her role model – her mother. It is a good and easy read but I suggest you have a highlighter to highlight some of your “aha” business-building moments – you are going to want to go back and apply them to your own career.

These five recommendations should keep you reading this summer. Enjoy your quiet morning reading and here’s to building your business successes!
